We are happy to announce that we have published a new article based on research conducted in the CABI lab led by Dr. Kana Kimura and Maddie Valdez. In this study, we test what factors make someone good at learning new categories and whether those predictors differ between young and older people. We found that, across age groups, having more world knowledge and faster processing speed made for better category learners. We also found that someone's current state of mind (motivation, stress level, mood, and sleepiness) had very limited impact on their ability to learn a new category. Taken together, it seems that stable cognitive abilities matter more for new learning than transient states of mind.
